30 Quilts for 30 Years- "Flip This House" by CEO Ken Kaufman

A few words from our CEO, Ken Kaufman:

"I can’t believe it has been 30 years and I can’t believe we’ve made it to 303 colors! I remember the time, as a younger version of myself, that we had just 12 colors to tote around.

Kona did grow, but not because of some master plan; rather, it grew due to the ongoing request of quilters. "More, more, more" was the mantra, and we only chose to dance along to it.

The beauty of this 30 years, 30 quilts celebration is that it makes such a strong statement about solids. Whether you are drawn to traditional, contemporary, or art quilting, solids provide an amazing platform for personal creativity. So, though it took some prodding from the marketing department, I actually was quite excited to design my first quilt as part of the celebration. Now, many folks here at Robert Kaufman Co. know my educational background is in Fine Art, but few have seen anything except my meeting notes doodles.  So I thought I would share a few images of my work; an 8’x8’ woodblock print and a smaller acrylic painting on wood; note the black and white, two of my favorite Kona colors and the two most popular colors in the whole line.

The quilt I ultimately designed, Flip This House, features black and white. The original idea was sketched out on graph paper. I was trying to create a quilt where a shape would shift as it repeated across the quilt. I soon realized that the shape resembled a house, so I went with it! I really love the way this quilt came together.

I must give special thanks to Janice Ryan (Better Off Thread) for figuring out how to piece it, and Angela Walters for understanding my quilting thoughts and bringing her special touches to finish it out.

Now, I guess it’s time to learn to sew!"
