The Modern Quilt Guild

The Modern Quilt GuildBy now, I'm sure everyone has heard of the Modern Quilt Guild. If you haven't, then you really must read up on this wonderful new community!

Alissa of Handmade by Alissa & Latifah, The Quilt Engineer, founded the very first chapter here in LA, just over a year ago. Within no time, chapters started popping all over the country - and the world! Take a look at the long list (over 100!) of MQG member guilds and there's one for almost every letter of the alphabet - sans Q, U, and Z. (Here's looking at you Quitman, TX, Urbana, IL, and Zachariah, KY.) We've been admiring this new found love for quilting and were eager to help promote our craft within the new generation of quilters and sewists.

Thanks to Jake Finch, editor at Quilter's Home magazine, we were able to get in touch with Alissa and work out a plan to sponsor Kona charm pack challenges for any interested chapters of the MQG! The notice went out to guild leaders in November 2010, and the response has been overwhelming, in the very best way!

The details: Robert Kaufman Fabrics would provide Kona Cotton charm packs in the palette of the guild's choosing. The rules of the challenge are entirely up to each guild, so long as the charm packs were the main focus. Some groups allowed members to add one fabric, some more, and some kept it strictly solids.

Whatever the guidelines, we can't wait to see what wonderfully creative quilts have been made! We'll be keeping an eye on the MQG Flickr page, and you should too! It's full of the loveliest quilty eye candy and sure to inspire you. Alissa was even kind enough to create a separate Flickr pool, just for the Kona Challenge quilts!

*The Gainesville MQG may have been the first to complete their quilts, and showed them off at their February meeting. Can you believe their members had just under a month to complete their quilts?!

**It looks like the Kansas City MQG has completed their challenge too, and the results are stunning! This quilt is especially amazing. Take a look at the back, too, and you'll understand why. Just. WOW.

***LAMQG just revealed their quilts last night! Check them out here!
