Kona Charm Pack Challenge - LVMQG {Guest Post}

This is a guest post written by Jan, Vice President of the Las Vegas MQG.

---

Hi! I'm Jan and I am the Vice President of the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild. We began forming our group in January of this year and we were very excited to participate in the Kona Solid Challenge.

We selected the Classic Palette charm pack and distributed them to members at our April meeting. The 'rules' were to use at least a bit of all the colors in the charm pack, adding as much yardage as desired of two additional solid colors. Of course, we knew that rules are meant to be broken, so our judging categories were: Best Large Quilt, Best Small Quilt and Best Rule Breaker.

Although, some of the challenge participants were unable to be at our July meeting, nine members 'revealed' their projects.

All members in attendance voted for the winners in the three categories.

Back left: Patty won in the category of Best Large Quilt. Next to Patty, Tracie holds her winning entry in the Best Small Quilt category. Carolina is kneeling with her winning Rule Breaker Quilt. (Carolina traded the 'warm' colors in her charm pack with another member for more 'cool' charms.)

You can see all the entries here.

The Kona Solid Challenge was a great experience and we appreciate Robert Kaufman Fabrics for sponsoring the event!

Kona Charm Pack Challenge - NoVaMQG {Guest Post}

This is a guest post written by Natalie of the Northern Virginia MQG.

Hi Swatch and Stitch Readers! My name is Natalie and I am the founder of the Northern Virginia Modern Quilt Guild (NOVA MQG). I am guest posting today to share some of our projects from our Kona solid charm pack challenge. But first, I'd like to give a huge thanks to the people at Robert Kaufman fabrics and the Modern Quilt Guild who made this challenge possible! NOVA Modern decided to use our challenge fabric to create and donate Preemie quilts to our local NICU. The members were allowed to create any pattern they wanted with the charm pack provided and fabrics from their stash. Because we made preemie quilts, they also had to be between 29"x29" and 45"x45" (or any size in between) and constructed from all natural materials. This was our first challenge as a guild so we were all very excited! My favorite aspect of this challenge was seeing all the variety and creativity even with all of us essentially using the same fabrics. We had a great Show and Tell event April 30th at one of our member's house. Everyone had a blast showing their creations and seeing the other quilts that were turned in ahead of time. Most of the quilts were created using Kona solid charm packs (in the bright colorway) which were generously donated by RK to all the modern quilt guilds. Here are some photos of the ladies holding their quilts...

Kona Charm Pack Challenge - A2MQG {Guest Post}

This is a guest post written by the lovely Jenna of the Ann Arbor MQG.

---

Our Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild was so excited to participate in the Kona "No Prints Allowed" challenge sponsored by Robert Kaufman!

Participating members picked a charm pack and then went to work making quilts using at least 30 of the charms in the pack and adding up to 3 additional Kona solids.

The wonderful people over at Modern Quilt Relish were nice enough to guest
judge our quilts, and they chose Natalie for the winner!
We also had our members pick a Guild Favorite, and they chose Jenna's quilt.

And here's a little mosaic featuring the other amazing quilts our
guild made for this challenge!

You can see more images on our flickr page.  You can also see all the Kona Solids Challenge quilts made by other Modern Quilt guilds by checking out the MQG Robert Kaufman Kona Solid Challenge flickr group!

Special Thanks to Pink Castle Fabrics and Ann Arbor Sewing Center for donating our prize packages!

Thank you, Jenna & the entire A2MQG, for sharing your experience with us!

Kona Charm Pack Challenge - STLMQG {Guest Post}

This is a guest post written by the lovely Kristy, President of the St. Louis MQG.

Hi Swatch & Stitch Readers, Kristy here from the St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild.  I wanted to share with you some of the amazing quilts that our guild made as part of the Kona Charm Pack Challenge.

We went with the Classic Palette and could only add 1 - 2 additional solids, and while we had 6 months to complete the challenge, many of us were still sewing on the binding at the last minute; yet as you will soon see it was worth it in the end.

While I would love to show you each and every quilt up close and personal, a small sampling will have to do; yet I encourage you to hop on over to our STLMQG blog for even more loveliness.

Quilt by Jessica who won 1st place.

Quilt by Wanetha, who won 2nd place.

Quilt by Juli Ann, who walked away with 3rd place.

Over 40 members participated in this, our 1st guild challenge, and as you can see in the below photo, even standing on a chair wasn’t enough to capture all the talent in the room.

Just some of the quilts shown during the June meeting, courtesy of Cindy.

If you want to see what some of the other guild’s around the country made, make sure you stop by the RK Challenge Flickr group and don’t forget to check out more of what we at the STLMQG are doing here.

Our thanks to Robert Kaufman for allowing us to showcase their wonderful Kona solids.

Kona Charm Pack Challenge - LAMQG (Guest Post)

This is a guest post written by the lovely Alissa of Handmade By Alissa & co-author of Block Party - The Modern Quilting Bee, published by C&T Publishing (May 2011).

The Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild was so thrilled when Robert Kaufman generously offered to sponsor a solids challenge with all of the different Modern Quilt Guilds!  We jumped at the chance to take part.

In LA, we decided to go with the "dusty" palette charm pack. We announced the challenge at our January meeting and the results were shown off at our March meeting, giving us two months to complete a quilt.  Everyone who wanted to take part in the challenge was given one charm pack and from there we were allowed to add only ONE additional solid fabric for the quilt top, and one more for the binding.

We all had so much fun working with the wonderful solids!

The whole guild with their quilts.We thought it would be really fun to have a few prizes for the challenge so we passed out ballots and the whole guild voted!

Best of show was a tie!

Best of ShowThese quilts were made by Chris and Andrew.  Isn't it amazing how they seem to work as a series?  Both winners picked Ash as their background fabric!

Other amazing results:
Wonderfully improv pieced by Jane who cheated a bit by adding two fabrics!

Made By Kelli who appliqued on all of the lovely butterflies.

Ramona made these amazing cathedral windows - can you imagine the time she put in??

You can check out all of the quilts that all of the Modern Quilt Guilds are making in this flickr group!  Looks like there's countless beautiful modern quilts out there being made with the Kona charm packs!
